Contemporary stoneware pottery influenced by the ceramic traditions of Asia

Nature's Influence

The earliest natural impressions in my life are of mountains, trees, rocks, water and sky. I recognize the same natural rhythms in my pottery that I do in mountain landscapes, clouds, falling water, and other natural phenomenon. The forms of my pots may be likened to mountains, and the glazes and decorations, in essence, are no different from clouds colored by sunrise or sunset, or from falling water and breaking waves spilling and tumbling and arranging themselves in an infinite variety. In the extreme heat of the kiln the minerals comprising the glazes become fluid and are as freely shaped by fire as clouds and water are by wind, but unlike clouds and water, Nature’s mark is made permanent

I am fortunate to be able to live in a scenic area where Nature’s beauty is always apparent. To the west of my studio is Lake Champlain and the Adirondack mountains and to the east are the Green Mountains. Every day here is an inspiration.  I have also enjoyed Nature’s various manifestations in my travels.  Below are pictures from some of my trips.  I will update this page as time allows so please check back.
